The time you spend when you first wake up in the morning is what influences your entire day. These first 10 minutes are crucial! Make sure you’re doing the right things first thing in the morning, to ensure you’re at your fullest potential for the rest of the day!

1.) No More Snoozin’

I’ll be the first to admit that i’m guilty of setting 5 alarms. I use to snooze all the way up until my last alarm which is so dangerous! But once you take it upon yourself to wake up at the allotted time you plan for, you’ll feel so much more at peace in the morning. You won’t have to rush. You’ll even feel better rested by avoiding the whole “5 more minutes”.

2.) Stretch

Stretching first thing in the morning has a variety of health benefits. Some of which are increased muscle and joint flexibility, stress relief, and improved circulation. Take that few extra minutes when you first open your eyes to spread out like a starfish. Then sit up and reach down to touch your toes. You’d be surprised just by how much more this helps you wake up and increase your mood even though it’s so early in the morning!

3.) Plan Your Day

There is no better feeling than having it all written down. Just lay it all out on the table. When I want to have a productive day I write down everything I need to get done for the day in order. For example:

  • Gym (Cardio & Legs)
  • Class (8:30-11:30am)
  • Errands
    • Publix: fruit, eggs, bread
    • Post Office: Drop off packages

Writing everything down really helps ensure that I get everything done that I need to. It makes me feel more accomplished too! You cross things off as you go along. It’s like a dainty little list of organized chaos.

4.) Breakfast

The most important meal of the day, servin’ it up Gary’s way! (If you actually got that, bless your soul.) Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day! It’s crazy the amount of people who start their days without it. They just drink some over caffeinated coffee, call it breakfast and then they wonder why they feel like death all day. Well, well, well. Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism, helping you burn calories throughout the day. There are endless benefits to eating a well-rounded breakfast. Don’t deprive your body of these necessary morning nutrients.

5.) Music

Music is food for the soul. It is. I truly, whole-heartedly believe that. Music is a huge contribution to your mood. When i’m sad, I listen to sad music it allows me to bathe in self-pity. If I’m in a bad mood I really want my emotions to come caving in on me like the world is literally coming to an end. (Idk why I do this to myself, but I just do, lol I can’t be the only one) But on the other hand, in the morning… I listen to upbeat, happy music. This is what charges my mood for the day. It’s crazy what a little music can do for the mind/soul.

6.) Water

I’m pretty sure that every post of mine someway, somehow has water tied to it. I can’t help it, water is literally key to everything in life! Boyfriend broke up with you? Drink some water. Failed your exam? Get an iced cold glass of h2o. Cat died? WATER IS THE ANSWER PEOPLE! Roughly 60% of your body is made of water, and after sleeping for 7-8 hours your body is practically begging to be replenished! Opt for a glass every morning when you first wake up. I like to add a lemon wedge to mine! 🙂

7.) No Phone

Wait what!? You’re trying to take my phone away! No way Josè! Wherever I go, my phone goes! This is a team. You can’t have one without the other. I know, I know. It’s crazy to think I’d be suggesting you actually give the phone a rest. I’m addicted to my phone/the internet. I get an uneasy feeling in my stomach when my phone is not around. #millenialprobs But seriously just try it. Turn off your phone notifications. Don’t scroll through social media as soon as you wake up. Allow yourself to relax in the morning and think about your day, what you dreamed about, and more importantly what you’re going to make for breakfast!


I hope that these 7 habits will help improve your life like they did mine. Remember, it takes 21 days to form a habit. If you start today, you’re 3 weeks from a better life! <3

  2. These are amazing habits to adopt immediately! I have to stretch first thing as soon I wake up, because I tend to feel so stuff. I’ve also been working really hard not reaching for my phone first thing, because it’s such a bad habit, but hard to break! I always have breakfast and water too. Great post, Melissa!
