We are slowly leaving winter behind and this girl has been spray tanning weekly to keep that golden glow-up for spring. I am naturally olive-toned so a level 1 spray tan really works wonders for me and enhances my natural skin tone. I wouldn’t dream of stepping into a UV bed, just personal preference. Spray tans have no health risks and can be done regularly to keep your tan! I have tested these methods and found 5 ways to make your spray tan last longer. Trust me, these really do work! Typical spray tans last roughly 5 days, but with these tips yours can last well over a week!
1.) EXFOLIATE BEFOREHAND
Most people know that if you spray tan you should exfoliate your skin. What they don’t know is the importance of exfoliating RIGHT before you go. If you exfoliated the night before and then apply deodorant, perfume, lotion and the natural oils in your skin come out, well it’s already too late. Your skin will begin to create a barrier and any chance of enhancing the length of your spray tan is gone. You have to do it right before you go. You also need to make sure you’re paying attention to the rougher areas of your skin such as the knees and elbows. You’re removing dead skin cells to create an even surface for the spray to adhere to. This step is VERY important. If you’re looking for a great exfoliator that is spray-tan friendly, I recommend Asutra’s Organic Exfoliating Body Scrub in Cooling Cucumber. This particular exfoliator is 100% dead sea salt and it’s organic! Ideal for spray tanning, you’re welcome!
2.) COLD SHOWER
Us women like the temperature in our showers to burn like the fiery pits of h-e-double hockey sticks, there is no denying that. This is the ONE exception you must make. I was actually doing all of the other tips on this list and once I stopped burning my skin with fire breathing water, it really made the biggest difference. There is just something about steaming hot water that relaxes me, it’s a feel-good kind of pain. I know you know what I mean! But when hot water touches our spray tanned skin, it causes the spray to break down so much faster. It will also cause it to be very patchy and un-even. Nobody wants to step out of the shower lookin’ like a lizard. Just trust me on this one.
Ok Melissa! So what happens when I get out of the shower? Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! Do not forget this vital step. This should go without saying, but just incase… the moisturizing is after you shower off the spray tan the next morning. NOT, before you go in. Before getting a spray tan you want your skin completely free of any product at all. When choosing a good moisturizer pick something hydrating, and stay away from lotions like Bath and Body Works which contain silicones and will wear down your spray faster than you can say sabotage. My all-time favorite spray tan extending lotion is Crown of Gold by Devoted Creations. It’s only $15 on Amazon! This stuff not only smells amazing, but has a slight bronzer in it so each time you apply it’s moisturizing and evening out your skin tone! But don’t worry, it doesn’t leave any stains or come off on your clothing. It dries instantly.
4.) APPLY SUNSCREEN
More often than not, when people get spray tans, they’re going on vacation or to the beach. Somewhere they will find themselves lounging in the sun. Although the goal at this point is not to get tan, because we already are tan at this point… make sure you are applying sunscreen to protect not only your spray tan, but your skin people! Even if you’re someone like me who never burns in the sun, you still want to protect your skin. While you may not be getting a sun burn, your skin is still effected every time you expose it to UV rays. The UV rays dry the skin, and the less hydrated your skin is….the quicker your spray tan fades away to nothing. I like to use Sun Bum’s Original Moisturizing Sunscreen. It smells great and is hypo-allergenic and paraben-free.
5.) STAY HYDRATED
You can’t expect your skin to hold the moisturizer you apply if you’re body itself isn’t even hydrated. This seems like it can’t be true, but you really should be ensuring you’re getting your 8-10 glasses of water in each day if you want to optimize your spray tan. Your skin is a huge part of your body and is always affected when you’re not drinking enough fluids. Applying lotion just isn’t enough. Drink that water!!! I should really practice what I preach because something I really struggle with is drinking enough water. Rest assured, I’m atleast making a conscious effort people!
